PENFOLDS Grange Hermitage Shiraz 1961 NOTES South Australia 1 BOTTLE AU$ 2,783.00

Robert Parker Score: 89 points

Reviewer: Robert M. Parker, Jr. — E20021 Feb 2002

Drink 2002–2002

A blend of 88% Shiraz and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1961 was the first Grange to incorporate some grapes from Coonawarra. Nevertheless, the base for this wine continued to be the Magill estate in Adelaide, the Barossa Valley, and the Kalimna sector of the Barossa. The first bottle was completely maderized, but a second showed plenty of amber in the color, a somewhat monolithic personality with notes of roasted coffee, singed leather, hot rocks, herbs, underbrush, and pruny fruit. The wine is somewhat out of balance, with the tannin and acidity dominating the fruit with sweetness. It needs to be drunk up.

Penfolds — The Rewards of Patience, Ninth Edition

Drink: Very rare. Drink now

Deep crimson. Lovely mulligatawny, dark chocolate, cedar aromas with spice, frankincense notes. Completely developed with buoyant meaty/demi- glace, cedar, spice flavours, fine loose-knit graphite tannins and well-integrated acidity. Finishes velveteen and long with bittersweet notes. Still holding, but beyond the cusp. 12.7% alc "Pan scrapings and the plum jam that comes in tins. Dark chocolate, black cherries within. A muscular wine, bass and bottom end. Firm and still taut." (NR) 88% Shiraz, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon Magill Estate, Morphett Vale and Modbury Vineyard (Adelaide), Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley), and Coonawarra Released as Bin 95 and Bin 395.
