| PENFOLDS Grange Hermitage Shiraz 1979 NOTES | South Australia | 1 BOTTLE | AU$ 943.00 |
Robert Parker Score: 90 points
Reviewer: Robert M. Parker, Jr. — 10031 Aug 1995
Production: 5,700 cases Blend: 87% Shiraz/13% Cabernet Sauvignon
The 1979's black/purple color is followed by a subdued nose revealing scents of mint, blackcurrant, licorice, and earth. This huge, full-bodied, moderately tannic Grange is extremely youthful and backward. Although not as thick or massive as either the 1978 or 1980, this is a large-scaled, mouthfilling heavyweight from Down Under. It can be drunk now, but 2-4 more years of cellaring will result in more complexity.
Note: The production figures shown are for twelve bottle cases unless otherwise noted.

Deep crimson. Intense choco-berry liquorice allsorts/ aniseed notes with hints of molasses/apricot notes. Saturated blackberry pastille, praline, stone fruit flavours, chocolaty firm tannins and underlying mocha, roasted walnut notes. Leather spices at the finish. A solid and richly flavoured Grange with sturdy/dominant tannin structure. Should hold for many more years though. 12.9% alc "Fennel seed and Dutch liquorice. A fine marzipan seam. Black fruits and some soft vanilla. Dark chocolate coated tannins and a long, fine taper." (NR) 87% Shiraz, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley), Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Magill Estate (Adelaide), and McLaren Vale Magnums first released. Last vintage using bottles with off-white foil capsules.
