The 1951 Penfolds Grange Hermitage – the first, experimental vintage – is one of the rarest and most valuable wines in the world. Valuing the famous 1950s and 1960s “special bins” takes great care: current market activity and the condition of each bottle matter as much as past results.
The sales below are accurate and verifiable, but a value for these wines comes down to bottle-by-bottle assessment. As with rare coins and stamps, condition – label damage, fill level (ullage), provenance and cellaring history – can move a value by more than 50%.
Market activity matters too. Some rare 1950s Granges don’t come to market every year, so the last sale price for an extremely rare bin may be five or more years old, and demand may have moved since.
