Medium-deep crimson. Dark chocolate, dark berry, espresso, hint black olive tapenade aromas with hint of dried leaves. Supple and sinuous with fresh cassis dark cherry, dark chocolate flavours, grainy firm leafy textures, some marzipan hint leather polish notes. Builds up gravelly firm at the finish with long mineral acidity. "A big graphite/ironstone structure. Not quite the length and concentration of the 1998, and more akin to the 1996 in terms of savouriness and austerity." (ER) Should continue to improve for a few more years. 13.8% alc Coonawarra (69%), Padthaway, Western Australia, Barossa Valley, Bordertown, McLaren Vale 12 months' maturation in 17% new French oak, 13% new American oak and 70% in seasoned American and French oak.
