Drink 2006–2016
Slightly disappointing compared to some of its siblings, the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 407 is a multi-regional blend of 100% Cabernet that spent time in both new and old French oak. While very good, it did not sing as loudly as some of Penfolds’ other efforts. It reveals notes of spice, dried herbs, cedar, damp earth, black cherries, and currants. Medium-bodied with a lovely attack and mid-palate, but jagged tannin in the finish, it should drink well for 5-10 years.

Medium-deep crimson. Intense blackcurrant, black cherry, black olive, dried roses/sage aromas. Inky deep wine with plush cassis, praline flavours, fine loose-knit chocolaty/vigorous tannins, and underlying vanilla, marzipan, cedar notes. Finishes leafy/firm. A classic aged Penfolds Claret style. "A marriage of sweet and savoury fruit. Well-integrated new oak, ripe chewy tannins, lifting acidity and only a little tertiary leather and black tea. You wouldn't think this wine is 20 years old." (ER) Lovely inky density and torque. 14% alc McLaren Vale (30%), Padthaway, Coonawarra, Bordertown, Langhorne Creek, Wrattonbully 12 months' maturation in 10% new French oak, 5% new American oak and 85% in seasoned American and French oak.
