Drink 2018–2030

A substantial 11% of the 1994 Grange is Cabernet Sauvignon, and it's most clearly apparent on the elegant, leafy, floral nose. On the palate, it's more clearly Grange and Shiraz-like, with plenty of weight and richness along with flavors of dried fruit, roasted meat and mocha, but there's also a sense that it's starting to lighten and become approachable/mature. Drink now or hold up to another 10 years or so.

Penfolds — The Rewards of Patience, Ninth Edition

Drink: Drink now 2045

Medium-deep crimson. Inky dark chocolate, panforte, black cherry aromas with roasted coffee, roasted walnut notes. Concentrated black cherry pastille, cassis, praline, mocha flavours, plentiful slinky/chalky tannins, lovely mid-palate viscosity and underlying liquorice, star anise notes. Finishes chocolaty firm. "A lip-smacking salinity offsets some of the riper notes, making this a fascinating wine." (MJ) A classical Grange vintage with the opulence and balance further ageing. 13.5% alc "Peter Gago's first red-wine vintage" [as Penfolds oenologist]. "Blackish garnet. Crushed ants and blackberries. Such excitement compressed in here! Dry finish, but with ink and fruit, this should eventually be a great drink. Very long finish. So impressive!" 89% Shiraz, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley), Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Coonawarra When it comes to Grange, there is no broken line through the generations and vintages. We all supported Max's ambition and played our part in refining the style and making it the legend it is today.
