Drink 2024–2040

Gago opened two bottles of this wine, both of which showed signs of past seepage, hence my question mark after the rating. I suspect pristine bottles will show better than these did. A bit mossy and sullen, the 2004 Grange is going through a cranky adolescence. Mocha, cedar and dark fruit on the nose are echoed on the palate of this full-bodied, concentrated wine. It's dark and rich, just needs another 5-6 years to emerge on the other side.

Drink: Drink now 2060

Deep crimson. Seabreeze, bush garrigue, black brambly, roasted walnut apricot aromas with a of liquorice. Elegant, persistent and lush with fresh black cherry, cassis, mocha, dark chocolate flavours and superb loose-knit chalky/graphite slinky tannins. Finishes long and sweet with some red liquorice/ brambly notes. Lovely density, richness and torque. "Firm at the edges, but quite open-knit at its core, allowing you to move through the wine rather than fight through." (NR) 14% alc "Dark. Red-blue-black fruit. Chiaroscuro, ostinato. Coal and Long, looping, soot-dusty tannins soaked in the darkest, most luscious of fruit." (TC) 96% Shiraz, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon (significant contribution Block 42) Barossa Valley (including a substantial proportion of Kalimna Shiraz), McLaren Vale, and Magill Estate (Adelaide)
