This has always been one of the softer, more civilized, and subtle examples of Grange Hermitage. It does not possess the structure or tannin of the 1983, the concentration, extraction, or class of the 1982, or the massiveness of the 1981. Nevertheless, it is an outstanding wine with good fatness, a clean, cassis and oak-scented nose, a rich, full-bodied personality, a velvety texture, and light tannin in the finish. Although drinkable, it is not yet fully mature from a complexity perspective. This satiny-styled Grange should drink well for another 10-15 years.
Note: The production figures shown are for twelve bottle cases unless otherwise noted.

Medium-deep crimson. Very primary cassis, red cherry, blackberry pastille fruit-driven aromas and flavours with underlying praline notes and lovely velvety tannins. Lovely chocolaty firm finish with seductive sweet fruits. Not a blockbuster year, but a charming vintage. Best to drink soonish though. 14.2% alc "Bitter chocolate, cherry liqueur. A fragrant dark berry compote. Ebullient and expressive. A Grange with 1980s big hair. A firm, Fernet- like bitter twist through the tannins." (NR) 95% Shiraz, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley), Barossa Valley, Magill Estate (Adelaide), McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, and Coonawarra
