Drink 2011–2020
The 1976 Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet (Claret) displays a very deep garnet-brick color and pronounced notes of dried figs, mulberries and spice cake over iodine, leather, tobacco leaf and sandalwood. Medium to full-bodied, rich, ripe and mature in the mouth, it has a medium level of grainy tannins, enlivening acid and a very long finish. This vintage still has a lot of life and should drink now through 2020+.
The first vintage of the good value Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet was 1976. Back then it was labeled as “Claret” in reference to the style rather than the grapes. In September 2011, Peter Gago put together a vertical of the Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet, going back to the very first vintage.
