Drink 2011–2022
Deep garnet-brick colored, the 1996 Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet offers notes of creme de cassis, mincemeat, salami, soy and black olives plus nuances of espresso and prunes. Very crisp in the medium-bodied mouth, it gives a medium-firm level of chewy tannins, excellent concentration of mid-palate fruit and quite a savory finish with a hint of dried mint. Drink this now to 2022+.
The first vintage of the good value Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet was 1976. Back then it was labeled as “Claret” in reference to the style rather than the grapes. In September 2011, Peter Gago put together a vertical of the Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet, going back to the very first vintage.
