Drink 2011–2020
Deep garnet in color with a touch of brick, the 2002 Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet has a meaty / earthy nose with a slight dried herb character plus nuances of black pepper, duck breast and black olives. Medium-bodied, the palate offers a good concentration of mature fruit, crisp acid and a medium to firm level of fine tannins, finishing long. Drinking now, it should keep to 2020+.
The first vintage of the good value Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet was 1976. Back then it was labeled as “Claret” in reference to the style rather than the grapes. In September 2011, Peter Gago put together a vertical of the Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet, going back to the very first vintage.
