Penfolds — The Rewards of Patience, Ninth Edition

Drink: Rare. Drink now

Medium-deep crimson. Fragrant rosewater, polished leather, chinotto, dark chocolate aromas. Refined and fully developed with dark plum, mocha, leather, spice, panforte/smoked meat flavours, fine chalky tannins, very good mid-palate volume and fresh mineral acidity. Some earthy grippy notes at the Very much a Claret style with "a layered silkiness, fine tannic presence and remarkable potency for 50-year-old wine." (NB) Drinking well, but on a plateau now. A very great St Henri. 13.5% alc "Black fruited and muscular; dark nuggets scraped from roasting pans, the marrow scooped from roasted bones, ripe plums point of falling from the tree." (NR) "So delicate and beguiling. Lovely cherry, tobacco, ash, smoky floral expressions on the nose. A little light on its feet but a shell, with iodine, salt, bloody ferrous notes and tangy sweet berries. It sizzles on the tongue, enjoyable and light with energy great minty, spiced freshness on the finish." (GH) Magill, Modbury, Barossa Valley Cabernet, Magill Mataro
