Drink 2012–2022
The 2004 St.-Henri Shiraz was sourced from five regions and aged in seasoned oak. Purple-colored, the nose gives up aromas of smoke, game, Asian spices, blueberry, and blackberry. Smooth-textured on the palate, it is nicely layered with savory fruit, lots of spice, and enough stuffing to evolve for 3-5 years. This lengthy effort will be in its prime from 2012 to 2022.
Penfolds produces a bevy of excellent value-priced wines, many of which were reviewed in Issue 178.

Penfolds — The Rewards of Patience, Ninth Edition
Drink: Drink now 2050
Deep crimson. Intense mulberry, hint boysenberry, cassis praline aromas with lifted minty, floral notes. Well concentrated and voluminous with mulberry, blackcurrant pastille aniseed, touch bergamot flavours, fine lacy textures, attractive mid-palate volume and persistent mineral length. Builds up rusty/gravelly firm and earthy at the finish. "Compact and neat; not barrelling through the palate, but not quiet either. An impressive wine: a sleeper, if you will." (EL). One of the all-time great St Henri wines. Should last and evolve over the next few decades, but drinking beautifully now. 14.5% alc "A very harmonious mélange of floral finesse and spicy warmth. Great fruit purity, controlled energy and finely grained tannins. Refreshing and stimulating wine with still so much to unfurl." (NB) 96% Shiraz, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon Barossa Valley (46%), Langhorne Creek, Upper Adelaide, Padthaway, McLaren Vale
