For those unfamiliar with the wine, the Gregor is made from partially dried grapes, similar to the process in Amarone. The grapes are picked, then stored in a specially built ventilated shed until ready for crushing. The 2017 Gregor Shiraz is a thick, unctuous example, although maybe not as powerful as some previous vintages. Plums, blackberries, vanilla and toasted oak come together on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is rich and velvety in texture and yet surprisingly drinkable and long on the finish. At 15.5% alcohol, and as balanced as it is, it's a wine you could conceivably enjoy with your red-meat main course, not just on its own or with cheese.
