Sourced only from the Barossa Valley, RWT is aged exclusively in French oak, giving it two major points of difference from the rest of the Penfolds range. Always a sexy, voluptuous wine (and admittedly a personal favorite), the 2018 RWT Shiraz ratchets that up to new heights in a great Barossa vintage, boasting layers of berry-like fruit, refined vanilla shadings and baking-spice notes, plus more exotic elements like star anise and cocoa powder. It's full-bodied and plush without being unstructured in any way, with a lingering, complex finish and the concentration to age two decades or more.

Deep crimson. Perfumed blackberry pastille, blueberry, melted chocolate, mocha espresso aromas. Richly concentrated and chocolaty wine with glossy dark berry fruits, persistent chalky, perfectly integrated tannins and well-integrated dark chocolate, mocha, espresso marzipan notes. Chocolaty firm at the finish with seductive sweet fruits and fresh long quartz- like acidity. "Intensity, concentration and density are defining elements. Upfront tannins and new oak lend structure and complexity, while lively acidity is nicely balanced with the ripe fruit flavours. This needs more time to settle and unravel." (JD) A great RWT Bin 798 vintage with massive cellaring potential. 14.5% alc "An opulence and refined expression that reminds me of 2010. It's very bright and perfumed with subtle integration of new oak, rounded/polished tannins and an excellent integration of acid and alcohol. A particularly strong marriage of structure with flavour." (ER) 16 months' maturation in 64% new and 36% seasoned French oak hogsheads.
