1971 Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet - Shiraz
Penfolds Rewards of Patience ★★★★★
Penfolds — The Rewards of Patience, Ninth Edition
Drink: Drink now 2030
Medium-deep crimson. Beautiful wax polish, chinotto, dark chocolate, dark cherry aromas with roasted chestnut, liquorice, demi-glace, hint barnyard notes. Complete and well developed with dark chocolate, dark berry chinotto, cola, waxy, earthy flavours and fine loose-knit lacy/grippy textures. "Some Shiraz flesh still hanging off the lovely, finely detailed Cabernet frame." (NR) Claret-firm finish. A classic Bin 389 vintage at the brink of decline. "Gloriously venerable with the woodsmoke, touch farmyard/ mushroom tones staying on the right side of bright and satisfying. Given this is a 53-year-old wine, it has remarkable energy and persistence." (MJ) 1972-1975 Drink now - past Most bottles would be well past their best by now.
