Robert Parker Score: 89 points

Reviewer: Robert M. Parker, Jr. — 13523 Jun 2001

Drink 2001–2009

The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz Bin 389's dense saturated purple color is accompanied by an excellent bouquet of blackberries, licorice, and earth. In the mouth, it is a plush, fat, luscious, full-bodied effort with considerable appeal. Loaded with fruit and glycerin, this pure wine should drink well for 7-8 years.

Deep crimson. Superb opulent dark chocolate, dark cherry, blackberry, plum aromas with roasted chestnut, wax polish, smoky cigar notes. Inky deep, smooth and velvety wine with ample dark chocolate, dark cherry, blackberry fruits, fine loose-knit chocolaty textures and well-balanced mocha, hint crème caramel oak notes. "Polished and slick up front before raspy tannins punch through the sheen and granulate the wine through to a long finish." (NR) A lovely Claret style. A famous Bin 389 with great fruit density, torque and flow. 14% alc "A little too ripe, too oaky and too forced. While plenty of palates will love the scale of flavour here, I prefer the more balanced and intricate vintages." (MJ) 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Shiraz Padthaway (30%), Bordertown, McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley
