Drink 2020–2060

One of the highest points of this vertical tasting, the 2010 Suduiraut reveals a dense, powerful bouquet of ripe apricots, exotic fruit, mango, pineapple, saffron and spices. More solar than the 2009 and with a full-bodied structure, it’s rich and concentrated, layered and seamless with a fleshy core of fruit and stunning controlled power, finishing long and mineral with bright acids. This stunning blend of 90% Sémillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc, harvested between September 22 and November 9 in five tries, was matured for 20 months in oak barrels (50% new, 50% one year) and contains 145 grams per liter of residual sugar.

Drink 2020–2045

Pale to medium lemon-gold in color, the 2010 de Fargues charges out of the gate with super-intense green mango, lemon Meringue pie and baked pineapple notes with underlying hints of toasted almonds, clover honey, coriander seed and allspice plus a waft of beeswax. Full-bodied and concentrated, with wicked backbone of acid, the densely packed, multi-layered palate delivers layer upon layer of electrically charged citrus and tropical fruit notes, finishing very long with loads of savory nuances.

Drink 2016–2035

The Chateau de Fargues 2010 has a fresh and vibrant, well-delineated bouquet with peaches and cream, quince and buttercup on the pretty nose that unfolds in the glass. The palate is taut and linear on the entry with a silver thread of acidity lending this Sauternes race and class. There is ample freshness here and an effervescent quality that lends its life and vigor. Vivacious and appealing, this should age well for the next 20-30 years, possibly more. To repeat my comment from barrel: “This is another great de Fargues.” Chapeau! Drink 2016-2035+.

The bouquet on the 2010 de Malle demands some coaxing from the glass, but it is worth waiting for, as there is wonderful minerality waiting to surface. The palate is very well-balanced, with good acidity and botrytis. This is a clean, crisp, precise Sauternes that revivifies the palate, ready for the next sip. De Malle has produced one of its finest vintages to date. Bravo!

Drink 2020–2040

Pale to medium lemon-gold colored, the 2010 Suduiraut features quite a savory nose with notes of lightly browned toast, salted almonds, nutmeg and cinnamon over a core of crème caramel, pear tart and peach cobbler. The palate is decadently sweet, concentrated and unctuous with soft acidity and a spicy finish.

Drink 2020–2036

Pale to medium lemon-gold in color, the 2010 Raymond-Lafon comes charging out of the gate with flamboyant floral and spice notes of lime blossoms, jasmine, honeysuckle, allspice and powdered ginger plus wafts of dried mango and pineapple tart with a touch of marzipan. Rich, full-bodied, decadently spicy and fantastically opulent, it has oodles of freshness lifting all the accented fruit to a long and layered finish.

The Raymond-Lafon 2010 has a complex bouquet with lemon peel, almond and quince aromas, and is well-defined with an impressive sense of energy. The palate is well-balanced with a viscous opening, and well-judged acidity. It builds toward a rounded, pineapple and marmalade- tinged finish. This has good weight and presence with plenty of strikingly fresh acidity to keep everything balanced. This wine deserves a round of applause.

The Chateau d’Arche has an attractive nose with subtle notes of lemon curd, almond and pear, struck through with impressive delineation and lift. The palate is medium-bodied with good weight and tension, fine focus and minerality, leading to a fresh vibrant, quite floral finish with purity and a decent (although not great) level of botrytis. This is an accomplished Sauternes from an estate that has raised its game in recent vintages.

The Clos Haut Peyraguey has a tight, well-defined bouquet with subtle notes of honey, lime flower and brioche. The palate is medium-bodied with fine acidity and a tangible sense of tension, with touches of spice and lemongrass towards the finish. This is an intellectual Clos Haut Peyraguey that might surprise a few people after bottling.

Pale to medium lemon-gold in color, the 2010 de Malle is a little closed at this stage, offering glimpses at lemongrass, crystalized citrus peel and lime blossoms with hints of allspice, fresh hay and orange marmalade. The palate is full and unctuous with loads of citrus flavors on offer and a pleasant tanginess to the finish.

Medium lemon-gold colored, the 2010 Clos Haut-Peyraguey features evolved notes of crème brûlée, candle wax and toasted almonds with touches of fresh hay and burnt sugar. Full-bodied, concentrated and seductive, the maturing fruit lends a savoriness to the otherwise opulent character, finishing spicy.

Pale to medium lemon-gold colored, the 2010 D'Arche offers up intense notes of lemon meringue pie, pineapple tart and dried mango with touches of allspice and crushed rocks. The palate has appealing freshness cutting through the ripe, rich flavors, finishing pleasantly minerally.
