PERFECT 50 - SUPERB 96pts - Tasting note: [November 2016 bottling] Pure polished copper. Great viscosity. Superb aromas of dried fig, fruit cake, dates, cinnamon, cigar box, liquorice bullets, hazelnut and cocoa. Four decades in oak makes its presence felt but the wood is sufficiently balanced by a sweet thread of orchard fruits (fig, nectarine, apricot); enlivened with warming spices through the finish. An understated, drier-style. The bouquet is a delight. 41.9% Alc./Vol.
Previous bottling tasted October 2016: Distilled in 1976 and bottled in June 2016. Deep mahogany with gold ochre edges. Fabulous dessert styled aromatics are pure and intense including caramel fudge, sticky date pudding and mocha followed by unexpectedly vibrant, fruity notes of dried apricot / fig / mango; five minutes of air contact draws out fruit toast, cigar box and rancio adding further layers to the bouquet. Delicate and breezy entry has a fruit freshness that belies its age. Mid palate gains momentum with a slow motion tsunami of bitter chocolate, rancio, hazelnut, dried fig and vanilla carried by powdery tannins. After four decades the oak is closing in but never quite overwhelms. Rounds off with a late burst of muscat-like sugars, vying with ultra-fine tannins in an aftertaste that goes on and on. A stunning grandfather brandy that's a relative bargain on the world stage. Superb. 41.5% Alc./Vol. 96 points

CLINIC CERTIFICATION - Buy with confidence - RP100 - Consistently one of the most awesome wines ever made at Grange, this blend of 89% Shiraz and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon (13.9% alcohol) was the first Australian wine to cost $20 upon release. I have had this wine six separate times, every time rating it between 96 and 100. It had a phenomenal showing at Penfolds' Magill estate. The color is an opaque purple, the wine massive, full-bodied, and to me, the quintessential Grange. Notes of blackberry liqueur intermixed with cassis, charcoal, new saddle leather, and underbrush resonate from the glass. Huge, thick, unctuously textured, with extraordinary concentration but perfect harmony among all of its elements, this is a prodigious Grange that is still not fully mature. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2020. A legend for sure!

UNFURLS - RP95+ - The 1986 Lafite Rothschild unfurls in the decanter and glass with aromas of earthy blackcurrant fruit mingled with notions of cigar box and red berries. Richer and darker in profile than the 1975 drunk alongside, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and concentrated, displaying a velvety attack and a lively core of fruit, with just a touch of the tannic asperity that often defines this vintage in the Médoc making itself felt on the finish. As it approaches its 40th birthday, the 1986 Lafite still needs several hours' decant to show its best. MUSEUM RELEASE

LONG-TERM - RP95+ - The exquisite, well-made 1996 vintage Champagne is a backward, long-term proposition that remains 1-2 years away from its apogee. The 1996 Cuvee Elizabeth Salmon Rose reveals a light pink hue as well as vivid strawberry, raspberry, and berry fruit with hints of smoke, crushed rocks, and even a touch of rhubarb in the background. Boldly-flavored, with crisp acidity, with most of its character at the back of the mouth, this is a brilliant, medium to full-bodied vintage rose to drink over the 10+ years.
GREAT ON STEROIDS - Great Vintage - Great House - Great Big format - A Magnum for the Big occassions - Great Timing - Perfect tribute to celebrate a Big "6" birthday in 2026 - 40 - 50 - 60 - 70 - Great Presentation - Comes in the legend Cristal Wooden "jewel box" presentation case

| JAM 0014 | 1 MAGNUM IN WOODEN BOX | Current Bid: $800 |
BRILLIANT - RP98 - The brilliant 1996 Dom Perignon, which has largely disappeared from the marketplace, may be the finest young example of DP I have ever tasted. Notes of crushed rocks, honeysuckle, lemon oil, orange marmalade, and white pear provide a stunning aromatic display as well as palate impression. Great acidity and huge flavor intensity backed up by vibrant acidity make this an exquisite Champagne. It should drink well for 20-25 years, possibly longer. Readers should remember that the 1971 Dom Perignon Rose is still drinking exquisitely. I recently had the 1969 and 1970 Dom Perignons (from magnum), and both were drinking brilliantly. It makes one realize just how long-lived these wines can be. Production is confidential, but there must be hundreds of thousands of cases of Dom Perignon since it available in most of the world’s luxury hotels and restaurants.

REMARKABLE - RP97 - The 1996 Dom Perignon OEenotheque offers up layers of pastry, lemon, smoke and toastiness. At first deceptively understated, the wine turns positively explosive and layered on the palate, showing remarkable tension, elegance and power, all wrapped around a seriously intense frame. The balance between fruit and acidity is awesome. This is a marvelous DP OEeno. The OEeno is the same juice as the regular Dom Perignon, except the OEeno is aged on the cork while the regular DP is aged in crown-sealed bottles. Once disgorged, the OEenos gets a slightly lower dosage than is typical for the original release DP. This bottle was disgorged in 2008. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026.

Glowing, deep golden yellow; as ever, almost impossibly rich with apricot, cumquat and lime aromas with well-balanced and integrated oak giving a hint of grated coconut. The palate provides more of the same, with fresh cumquat, coconut and vanilla flavours, long carry and finish.

PENFOLDS FIVE STAR - Rewards of Patience - Drink now to 2045 - Deep brick crimson. Intense cassis, blackcurrant, polished leather, dark chocolate and sage aromas with espresso/leafy complexity. Lovely concentrated blackcurrant, dried plum, mulberry, and liquorice flavours, fine-grainy tannins, silken/supple mid-palate and underlying roasted chestnut/vanilla oak. Finishes cedar/leafy firm. Beautiful density, power and elegance. One of the great Penfolds reds of this decade. “A seriously good wine and developing very well. Has the blood lines of Bin 64.” (JH) “A towering monument to Barossa cabernet, built on dark, ripe fruit and load-bearing tannins. A celebration of the tanned muscular varietal character that old vines in warmer climes can bring.” (NR)

ALOOF - RP98 - The 1996 Lafite-Rothschild was remarkably deep in color considering that it is now 20 years in age. The bouquet is classic Pauillac with pencil shavings and sous-bois infusing the black fruit, masculine and a little aloof, yet focused and very well delineated. The palate is very well balanced with crisp blackberry and boysenberry fruit, spicier than I recollect, a crescendo of flavors so that it seems understated at first but fans out with a sense of confidence towards the finish. I think this still has more to give so cellar it away for another 5-8 years if you can, but otherwise this is an exemplary Lafite-Rothschild that I can envisage getting better and better in bottle, if not quite as enthralling as either Mouton-Rothschild or Château Margaux. Tasted July 2016. MUSEUM RELEASE

TROPHIES - JH96 - DWI 18 Watervale. Bright straw-green; a super-fragrant bouquet is led by citrus fruit, a framework of minerally acidity appearing on the palate in support of the fruit, but in perfect balance. A gold medal at the International Wine Challenge 2009 was followed by three trophies at the Queensland Wine Show 2010.

TOUR de FORCE - RP96-99 - The Anamorphosis project features Shiraz from Kalimna in the Barossa Valley aged in new oak from four of France’s finest coopers. Like most of the other R Wines, it has exceptionally creative packaging. There will be 100 cases of the 2005 Shiraz which will spend 30 months in new French oak. It was sourced from vineyards with 40- and 100-year-old vines. Opaque purple in color, it offers up an intense perfume of pain grille, scorched earth, tar, licorice, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. Voluptuous, thick rich, and full-bodied, it is a powerful yet seamless expression of Shiraz from a great terroir. It will age effortlessly for 20 years but can be enjoyed young because of its mammoth fruit. It is a winemaking tour de force.

BEAUTY - JH96 - Deep purple-red hue; has great equilibrium and harmony, partly reflecting its blend of Barossa/Eden Valley grapes and its 20 months in French oak, partly due to moderate alcohol, and a clear decision in the winery not to over-elaborate a wine of considerable beauty; 50 years under screwcap, half that under cork.

ABSOLUTE JOY - RP100 - The Laird is Powell’s new baby, coming from a single 5 acre / 2 hectare vineyard of Shiraz in the Marananga sub-region planted in the 1960s that recently became available for contracting. This is a very different wine from Run Rig. What is most striking about it is the combination of power and elegance in this first vintage, coming from a very good year in the Barossa. Matured for 3 years in new Dominique Laurent “Magic Casks” (Troncais French oak barriques with thicker staves designed for the long aging of Shiraz), 2005 The Laird gives a deep garnet color and pronounced nose that shows savory and spice notes over the fruit, with aromas of hung meat, Peking duck, fertile loam, underbrush, tree bark, anise, cumin seed, menthol, dried roses and lavender over warm black cherries, crush blackberries and fruit cake. The tight-knit, full-bodied palate is very fine with a high level of silt-like tannins and crisp acid running through the concentrated fruit and savory flavors, finishing very long with lingering earth and spice notes. At 14.8% declared alcohol, this is by no means one of the biggest wines in the Barossa, but it is most certainly one of the best. It’s an absolute joy to drink now but it is recommended readers give it 4-5 years more in bottle to soften and marry and enjoy it to 2030+.

PERFECTLY BALANCED - RP98+ - The 2005 d'Yquem continues to drink beautifully today, evoking aromas of honey, saffron, vanilla pod, apricot, jasmine and orange peel. Full-bodied, sensual and juicy, it’s medium to full-bodied, with a seamless texture and a perfectly balanced palate, finishing fruity and racy. Although still a little closed and in a rather discreet phase, it has magnificent aging potential, and readers with bottles in their cellars should leave them to mature for 10 to 20 years.
