PENFOLDS Grange Hermitage Shiraz 1955 | South Australia | 1 BOTTLE | AU$10000-12000 | AUD $ 6080 |
Robert Parker Score: 86 points
Reviewer: Robert M. Parker, Jr. — 10031 Aug 1995
Drink 2002–2002
Production: 2,530 cases Blend: 100% Shiraz
This wine, which I have tasted twice and given approximately the same rating, is drying out, with the astringent tannin taking the upper hand. The color is a garnet/ruby with considerable orange/brown at the edge. The wine exhibits an attractive spicy, herbal sweetness and some jammy fruit, but the acidity and tannin dominate. While still alive, the 1955 Grange Hermitage is largely of academic interest, although there is enough joy and complexity in its aromatics to merit its very good rating.
Note: The production figures shown are for twelve bottle cases unless otherwise noted.

Medium-deep crimson. Roasted coffee, herb garden, dark chocolate, sandalwood, sous bois aromas with some lifted dried roses, star anise notes. Smooth, silken-like palate with developed coffee/espresso, dark chocolate, cedar spice, rose, strawberry flavours, lacy/ satin-like textures and beautifully integrated acidity. Finishes bittersweet with a feathery plume. "The fruit has slipped away, but the silhouette of greatness remains." (MJ) Now past its peak of power and complexity, but the wine is still holding. 12.6% alc "The heavyweight champ tentatively climbing through the ropes for one more round. Relying on muscle memory and the roar of crowds long gone. You can see the boxer's physique and the spots where it's softened and sagged. Dry red fruits, a leather satchel full of old papers, some sun-warmed red earth. A fine juiciness is retained; a wispy curlicue of tannin steers it through the finish." (NR) 90% Shiraz, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon Magill Estate, Morphett Vale (Adelaide), Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley), and McLaren Vale. The most decorated Grange: winner of 12 trophies and 52 gold medals during its relatively short career on the Australian wine show circuit. Spent only nine months in oak. Named by US magazine Wine Spectator as one of 12 "Wines of the Millennium" in 2000. Bin 95 is the most common bottling. Also released as Bins 13, 14, 53, 54, and 148A. An historic Grange included in The Australian Ark's Canon of Australian Wine.
